Before the 20th century, our understanding of the pre-Columbian Andes was extremely limited and biased by all sorts of colonial and derogative narratives that systematically deprived native peoples of any cultural creativity or historical agency.
In the middle of this hostile environment, a Peruvian doctor would produce a series of works that would not only defend the creativity and historical agency of the natives, but also would change our understanding of the Americas forever.
